Day-Dreaming

Carl had only meant to close his eyes for a moment.

He sat slumped in the tiny break room of the prestigious firm where he was barely more than an overworked intern. Sleepless nights, endless tasks, and the constant pressure to prove himself had worn him down. During his fifteen-minute break, he let his head fall back and drifted off…

And in his dream he lived like a king.

In the dream he moved through a vast, luxurious mansion—marble floors, chandeliers dripping with glass, sunlight glinting off polished banisters. Handsome manservants bowed as he passed, addressing him as sir. There was no pressure, no deadlines. His only responsibility was choosing between lounging by the pool or reclining in front of the fireplace while someone brought him a drink on a silver tray.

Carl sighed contentedly in his dream, stretching out on a velvet chaise—

—until sound and light twisted sharply around him.

He blinked awake.

Except… he wasn’t in the break room.

He wasn’t even Carl.

She sat up slowly, her head spinning. The bed beneath her was soft, neatly trimmed with lace pillows. Her hands—small, delicate, and feminine—rested on a bright pink and white ruffled maid’s dress. The short puffed sleeves squeezed gently around her upper arms; a matching pink headband sat snugly against tidy, curled hair.

She gasped.

I’m… Theodora?

The knowledge came to her as naturally as breathing. Theodora—live-in maid of the very mansion Carl had been dreaming about.

And this bedroom wasn’t hers. It was simply the room she’d been taking a quick rest from cleaning, a habit the other maids whispered about but never reported.

There was no time to question it. Her body moved with practiced grace.

Theodora swung her legs off the bed, smoothing her skirt. First task: remake the bed she had just rumpled. She fluffed the pillows, straightened the comforter, tightened the hospital corners with swift, neat tugs. She wiped away any trace she had ever lain there.

Next came the rest of the room. She collected a watch left on a dresser. Folded a cardigan tossed over a chair. Dusted the mirrored vanity. Vacuumed meticulously, moving in straight, perfect lines.

Her motions were quiet, efficient, almost soothing.

Yet her mind wandered.

As she dusted a bookshelf, she found herself imagining something impossible—herself as a young man who had just graduated college… someone named Carl, sitting in a prestigious firm in a gleaming city skyscraper, wearing a suit rather than a frilly apron. Typing reports, attending meetings, chasing deadlines.

Theodora paused, feather duster in hand, her brow furrowing.

What a strange fantasy, she thought. Me? In an office? Being… a man?

She shook it off and returned to work, humming softly.

By the time she finished, the room was spotless. Perfect. Silent.

Still, that daydream tugged at her—so vivid, so real, as though she’d lived it. As though she missed it.

She smoothed her dress once more, preparing to move on to the next room of the mansion.
